NSC: VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE

Background

Vernacular architecture is defined here as those structures built by the local people using locally available material and adapting to local climatic conditions, without the inputs of an architect or trained professional. Vernacular architecture is best understood as a built environment that is based upon local needs; defined by the availability of particular materials indigenous to that particular region and most importantly, reflecting the local traditions and cultural practices of that community.

Objective

The objective of this specialized committee is the methodological and scientific identification, documentation and listing of the diverse vernacular architecture across the country. Study and documentation of vernacular architecture, would, in a broader sense, combine the study of the architecture, anthropology with aspects of history and geography.

Vision

The Committee proposes to document vernacular architecture across India, study and analyse the same and disseminate the information in order to promote the conservation of these various types of vernacular architecture. Encouraging the use of local materials and traditional designs, will in the long run, promote sustainable building practices.
