We are pleased to share details of the upcoming workshop on “Saving Modernism: Workshop on Concrete Repair and Retrofitting Technology for Buildings in Chandigarh,” organized by Chandigarh University, in collaboration with ICOMOS India and other key institutions.
The Saving Modernism: Workshop on Concrete Repair Technology for Buildings in Chandigarh is a four-day, advanced training program specifically developed for engineers, architects, and conservation professionals engaged in the evaluation and preservation of modernist concrete buildings. Set against the backdrop of Chandigarh’s iconic architectural heritage, the workshop provides a comprehensive and highly technical curriculum that integrates field diagnostics, laboratory analysis, repair technologies, and conservation practices.
Participants will be introduced to a structured methodology for assessing the condition of reinforced concrete structures, beginning with detailed visual inspections and progressing to the use of state-of-the-art non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques. The program also incorporates advanced physical, chemical, and microanalytical methods to investigate the mineralogical composition, deterioration mechanisms, and microstructural characteristics of historic concrete. These analyses will inform material compatibility assessments and guide the selection of appropriate repair mortars and protective systems.
Special emphasis will be placed on understanding and evaluating both historic and modern coatings through physical testing and chemical characterisation. Participants will explore the performance of protective measures in the context of long-term durability, vapour permeability, and visual impact.
The workshop aims to equip participants with the technical skills and theoretical foundation required to implement durable, compatible, and minimally invasive conservation solutions for modern concrete architecture. A certificate of completion will be issued to participants who attend and complete the full five-day program
