Mayong: Magical Art form and Tantric Literature of Mayong

Date: 12 Dec 2021 | online

The ICOMOS India North-East Zone is pleased to invite you all to the International Webinar on 'Mayong: Magical Art form and Tantric Literature of Mayong' in association with International Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICICH) and ICOMOS India National Scientific Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage (NSC ICH).

The early magicians of Mayong were proficient in black-magic practices and performed surprising feats by employing the power of their traditional knowledge system. Though the practices of black magic have disappeared, the white magic are still widely prevalent among the inhabitants. There were incantations practiced by the early magicians of Mayong which were only used to perform some virtuous feats. Approximately 300 manuscripts of incantations have been found in the village of Mayong. The tragedy is that the modern magicians of Mayong lost the pre-requisites of applying the traditional knowledge that embraces their cultural identity. If one knows something, one keeps it to oneself with great secret, perhaps due to its dreadful effects. Major portion of incantations were preserved in oral form also and they went into oblivion with the death of the magicians. However there have been unwarranted changes in it due to modernization and hence it is necessary to preserve this great intangible cultural heritage at any cost. ICOMOS India and ICICH are providing a platform to showcase the knowledge of Mayong as a valuable heritage asset in India..
