Riverscapes Session at IIT BHU : Water Connects Water Fest

Date: 17 Feb 2024 | IIT BHU, Varanasi
ICOMOS India Central Zone invites you all to the session on Riverscapes in the Water conference in IIT BHU. The session will be held on the 17th of February at 11:45 AM -12:30 PM at the conference hall of IIT BHU.

The idea of this session comes from a talk series which WforW foundation in collaboration with ICOMOS India curated last year.

India is home to diverse cultural and religious beliefs and water, water bodies and rivers have a spiritual place in all the cultures and belief systems. Civilisations like Harappan and Egyptian  started along the Indus Valley and the Nile Valley around 3000 BC. People’s lives were inextricably linked with the river system. Unfortunately, as countries industrialised and modernised, the rivers started to degrade. Encroachments on their banks and indiscriminate discharge of solid waste and wastewater have converted them into large sewers. Given that Rivers control the micro-climate of a region, any change in its features also affects the climate of that region. It's a vicious cycle that's resulting in temporal and spatial variability of climate variables like rainfall and temperature.
The objective of the session is to recognize the significance of waterways, their evolution and impact on socio-cultural aspects of the community, and to encourage individuals in conserving this intensive and extensive resource.

This session is conducted in collaboration with ICOMOS India. The discussion is moderated by Nishant Upadhyay, member of ICOMOS India Central Zone.
